The Department of Physics at Bergische Universität Wuppertal (Germany) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Position in Ultra High-Energy Cosmic Ray Physics with the Pierre Auger Observatory.
Job Description: The Department is involved in forefront research in the areas of ultra-high energy cosmic ray physics, neutrino-astronomy, and hot and dense nuclear matter. The successful candidate will join a team of about 20 people working on the Pierre Auger Observatory, the world’s largest cosmic ray observatory, located in Argentina and conceived to solve the long-standing puzzle about the origin of the highest energy cosmic rays. Presently, the observatory is undergoing a major upgrade to enhance the multi-messenger capabilities of the observatory (identification of primary mass of cosmic rays, photons, and neutrinos). The group at Wuppertal is at the forefront of many data analysis tasks, including multi-messenger physics, photon- and neutrino searches, as well as radio detection of air showers. Related research questions, such as cosmic ray propagation and tests of hadronic interaction models are addressed in collaborative research clusters with further national and international partners.

The position commences at the earliest possible date and is expected to be filled by June 15, 2022. Salary will be according to E13 TV-L. The initial appointment will be for 2 years. Prolongations will be possible.
Qualification: Applicants must have a PhD or an equivalent degree at the time of recruitment and will have strong backgrounds in astroparticle physics or related fields, such as particle- or nuclear physics. Profound knowledge in data analysis and willingness to travel to the Auger site in Argentina are preferred. A contribution to teaching in physics at a level of 4 hours/week is expected.
